  • Intermediate Band I-IV
    (Symphonic Band) 2 credits - Grades 9-12
    The Intermediate Band is a performance-oriented class for freshmen, sophomores, and some juniors and seniors. Students are required to complete Middle School Concert Band or the equivalent in order to enroll in Symphonic Band. All students are required to attend the preschool and after school rehearsals.

    Advanced Concert Band I-IV
    (Chamber Band) 2 credits - Grades 9-12
    Advanced Band is a performance-oriented class for seniors, juniors, and some sophomores and freshmen. The organization is designed to teach wind, percussion, and ensemble techniques.

    Membership is open to all high school students. Requirements for enrollment are at least one year as a member of the Floyd County Highlander Marching Band and at least one year as a member of the Intermediate (Symphonic) Band.

    Students must declare a “track” by March 1. The two tracks are “Marching Track” and “Concert Track.” After track selection, students may not change to another track without the expressed permission of the Band Director. Without this permission, students must drop the class or face failure. Concert track members will ONLY PARTICIPATE SECOND SEMESTER.

    The goal of this class is the exemplary performance of quality band literature; therefore after-school rehearsals and performances are considered to be a part of the class experience and are required.

    Jazz Ensemble I-IV (81350/60/70/80)
    (Jazz Combo Band) 2 credits - Grades 9-12
    Jazz Combo is designed to develop and improve the jazz vocabulary of Floyd Central instrumental music students. Jazz improvisation, styles, and history are the focus of the class and are taught every day. A fundamental knowledge of jazz theory, history, and performance practices will be taught through performance of jazz ensemble arrangements and compositions. Jazz Ensemble is an advanced performance class. Students will provide their own instruments with the exception of pianists) and be skilled at performance as a prerequisite to the class. Moreover, each student is expected to play as a soloist on a regular basis and will be tested on improvisational skills. The class will also give several concerts and perform at state jazz festivals. These outside of class activities are vital to the class, are required of all students, and are included in the class grade. The class is open to all high school students, but admission is by permission of the instructor only. Also, the size of the class may be limited if necessary.

    Jazz Ensemble
    (Jazz Band) 0 credits - Grades 9-12
    This ensemble meets after school and is NOT conducted for a grade. There is NO credit given on the members transcript. Jazz Ensemble is designed to develop and improve the jazz vocabulary of Floyd Central instrumental music students. Jazz improvisation, styles, and history are the focus of the class and are taught every day. A fundamental knowledge of jazz theory, history, and performance practices will be taught through performance of jazz ensemble arrangements and compositions.     Highlander Marching Band & Emerald Guard
    0.8 credits - Grades 9-12
    The Floyd Central Highlander Marching Band and Emerald Guard is a contest orientated Band. They perform at all of the home football games including at the New Albany game at the Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Starting in September, the band and guard compete at various contests in many different southern Indiana schools on Saturdays with the Indiana State Marching Band Finals on the last Saturday in October. Students have a great time and marching band adds to their education. Participation in a 2 week band camp is mandatory.

    Winter Percussion
    0 credits - Grades 9-12
    Winter percussion continues the contest orientation of the Highlander Marching Band throughout the winter. The only instrument section utilalized is percussion. It is open to all members of the Floyd Central Band, regardless of instrument, but they MUST play a percussion instrument. Tryouts may be necessary to maintain membership. Starting in late January, continuing through late March, the percussion group compete in various percussion contests.

    Winter Guard
    0 credits - Grades 9-12
    Winter Guard continues the contest orientation of the Emerald Guard throughout the winter. The Winter Guard compete in various area competions.
